Newark on Trent
Urbis were appointed to design a retail in Newark on Trent. The site is within a conservation area and adjacent to the Grade A listed Warwick and Richardson Brewery and Maltings requiring a sensitive design solution which respects the historic setting. We developed a design which responded in scale and materials to the existing context with a roof form and building orientation which was informed by the original buildings on the site which formed long sheds with gables towards the river frontage. The roof form is broken up with ventilation cowls which hark back to the industrial history of the past and avoids the vast expanse of flat roof which is a feature of most modern reatil park developments.
The landscaping to the river edge and pedestrian routes through the site between the existing buildings and new development link the whole together and activate the spaces between the buildings.
Planning consent was granted in 2013.
